  7.     AND DON'T INVITE LECH AND TADEUSZ TO THE SAME PARTY. Most
  8. Poles realize that Solidarity cannot go on being all things to
  9. all people: trade union, political party, shaper of the
  10. country's future. But hopes that the breakup would be amicable
  11. now look unlikely. The problem stems from an old hero. Lech
  12. Walesa wants to be President by forcing an early election. But
  13. most Solidarity legislators seem to prefer remaining in
  14. government and Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki. Even though
  15. his drastic economic reforms have cut living standards as much
  16. as 40%, polls of Poles show that he is more popular than Walesa.
  17. Lech is sulking in Gdansk.
